Supporting Healing at the Intersections

As part of the Hub Without Walls (HWoW) initiative, the Addiction Support Worker at House of Sophrosyne (HoS) plays a key role in delivering trauma-informed, harm-reduction-focused support to individuals impacted by both gender-based violence (GBV) and substance use.

This role is embedded within a multi-agency, survivor-centered network and addresses the intersecting and complex needs of survivors and, where appropriate, individuals causing harm.

By collaborating with Hiatus House and other core HWoW partners to ensure a seamless, integrated response, our Addiction Support Worker provides flexible, culturally responsive addiction services to individuals across Windsor-Essex.

Meeting Substance Use with Understanding

Our Addiction Support Worker provides compassionate, trauma-informed support for survivors navigating substance use alongside experiences of gender-based violence. Using harm-reducing and culturally safe approaches, they:

  • Offer one-on-one counselling and practical support tailored to each survivor’s needs.

  • Help connect survivors with other resources, such as housing, trauma counselling, and legal or financial empowerment resources.

  • Develop and support harm reduction and/or recovery plans that consider the effects of trauma, systemic barriers, and risk.

  • Work closely with other HWoW team members and community partners to ensure coordinated, wraparound care.

  • Provide consultation and support to partner groups, helping to build cross-sector capacity for responding to GBV and substance use in a trauma-informed way.

  • Provide flexible services in the community and across different agencies to meet survivors where they are - in person or virtually.
