New to Canada, but Never Alone

As part of the Hub Without Walls (HWoW) initiative, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Newcomer Support/Outreach Workers are embedded in four newcomer-serving agencies across Windsor-Essex.

This role provides culturally specific, trauma-informed support to immigrant, refugee, and newcomer survivors of GBV, while also strengthening each agency’s ability to identify and respond to GBV.

Support Workers function as trusted connectors offering early support, coordinating referrals, and contributing to prevention, education, and capacity-building efforts within their host agencies.

Care that Connects

Our GBV Newcomer Support/Outreach Workers help to ensure that newcomers experiencing gender-based violence feel supported and connected. Acting as a trusted point of contact, they:

  • Provide safe, low-barrier support to help survivors access the right services through warm referrals.

  • Support early identification of GBV in ways that are culturally responsive and respectful.

  • Strengthen awareness and confidence within host agencies, through training, and knowledge sharing to help build staff awareness and confidence in responding to and supporting survivors impacted by GBV.

  • Contribute to outreach, education, and workshops that promote healthy relationships, safety, and access to support.

  • Works closely with other HWoW team members and across settlement, employment, language, and community programs to ensure newcomers have coordinated care.
